Thou shalt have no other gods before me. - Exodus 20:3

At the time God gave this commandment, there were many gods in the nations around the Isrealites. God did not want his people to stray from worshiping Him, and follow other, false gods. Many of us believe that we do not have to worry about this, because there are no gods that we would rationally think of turning to. This is typically far from the case. There are things in our life that we would not give up. These things are “other gods” in our lives. We rationalize it away as something that may be necessary.
